Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Foundation
As difficult as this is to admit, I’m a foundation snob.
I’ve tried foundations from a variety of brands, price ranges, and consistencies. It’s been a great disappointment because like Goldilocks musing over which bed to sleep in I’m looking for the one that’s just right.
In a previous review I told you about my love for Dior Capture Totale foundation and today I’m introducing you to my all time #1 favorite foundation, the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Foundation.
This is a foundation that does not disappoint. It offers medium to full coverage, has a creamy consistency, imparts a subtle luminosity and feels better than any high grade moisturizer I’ve ever tried.
The Koh Gen Do foundation is formulated as a mineral cream foundation with 60% water giving you the coverage of a cream foundation and the finish of a liquid. Advanced technology (from Japan) also makes this a super hydrating formula that keeps your skin dewy and lasts for 10+ hours (I wore it for an entire day and hated to take it off!) due to the 6:3:1 ratio of water (60%), highly refined oils (30%) like Shea butter and jojoba and mineral powders (10%).
Koh Gen Do didn’t stop there because they also created this foundation with an ‘optical smoothing’ effect diffusing lines and imperfections – a terrific HD foundation. I can tell you the smooth finish and easy application of this foundation had me floored!
It is on the pricey side at $62 for 0.17 oz but a little goes a long way – even on days when I need extra coverage I still use very little to get a big result.
The shade ranges (12 total) from light to medium, shades that help correct redness and deep tones. I use shade 112 to help reduce redness and it works beautifully – I don’t need to color correct first and that saves me loads of time.
I’m giving this foundation my highest ranking of 5 smooches because it is my go-to, get me out of a skin issue jam foundation
What do you look for in a holy grail foundation?
❤Liz
PS. I purchased my foundation directly from Koh Gen Do. Their customer service is impeccable and they offer a reasonably priced starter kit should you want to give their line a try.
Deserted island worthy! My highest rating.

hi what shade do you wear in other foundations. i think 112 may be right for me based on your swatch but it’s still a bit hard to tell.
Hi Maria!
In MAC, I wear NC20-25, in Dior 20, in Chanel B20. Hope this helps!

i may have to try a lighter shade.
You’re welcome! Koh Gen Do has a shade selector on their website which may help.

Hi Liz,
May I know what skin type do you have? And do you know what’s the difference between the aqua and moiture foundation? I’m really interested in Koh Gen Do foundation, but I’m afraid it will not be suitable for my combination skin, specially since I live in a humid country. We do carry the brand here in our country but sadly we don’t have an exchange/return policy.
Hope you can help me. Thanks!
Hi Janelle,
I’ve never tried the Aqua foundation but it’s my understanding that it’s a more sheer, water based foundation compared to the Maifanshi which is basically a mineral makeup in cream form. I find the Maifanshi is a medium coverage that can be built up. My skin is normal/dry (drier in the winter) and sensitive. I get great coverage and never have a problem with sensitivity or having it melt off in the summer…and in my area it’s upwards of 100 degrees in summer months. Is there a way you can get a sample? If not, you could try contacting Koh Gen Do directly to see if they could send you a sample. They are very generous and have excellent customer service – it would be best if you could try the foundation before you buy. http://www.kohgendocosmetics.com
Hope this helps!
