I love 1970’s fashion and always enjoyed the style choices from icons like Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall and Debbie Harry.
What I most appreciate about the 1970’s (in terms of beauty and style) is how expressive women were. Coming off the 40‘s, 50’s and moving into the 60’s, women were now able to express themselves in a way they couldn’t before.
And did they ever!
There was something sensual about the 70‘s too from the variety of textures in fashion to the suggestive patterns and even in makeup.
The focal point wasn’t just limited to the eyes or the cheeks or the lips. In the 70’s makeup was very “look at me” (or hear me) and women had all sorts of fun bringing attention to their eyes, cheeks and lips (and various other parts of the body – again, this was a time of explosive expression).
I was a teen by the time the 70’s ended and appreciate the way that was paved by those brave chicas; the explorers, the hippie chics, the bra burners!
As you can probably tell, I’m a tad passionate about the history of women and the role beauty (nakeup in particular) played – and still does today.
Anyway, this weekend I embraced my own inner hippie chic and wanted to share my interpretation of that look with you…
Oh, and by the way, when I stopped off at Walgreens to pick up some Wet n’ Wild palettes I’d been meaning to try, the woman at check out commented that I looked very 70’s so I guess I could say…mission accomplished!
I chose a black and ivory floral maxi dress. You can never go wrong with a maxi (if it was good enough for Farrah Fawcett it’s good enough for moi!) – it’s great no fuss no muss weekend wear that allows you to be comfortable and still look good. And in case you’re wondering I did wear this sans bra
For shoes I chose rhinestone studded GUESS sandals (these are years old and have held up nicely) and a BEBE fringe edged black quilted bag. It has a modern hippie sort of vibe…don’t you think?

Jewelry was simple with this beautiful multi-colored beaded necklace I bought ages ago from a jewelry designer I met at a womans conference. I can’t find the name of the artist unortunatley but her work is amazing and I feel like a goddess wearing this piece.

As for makeup, I kept it light but chose expressive colors. Here’s a list of all the products used for my Saturday Weekend Style hippie chic makeup look:

I was inspired by the colors in my necklace
Makeup Forever Face and Body Foundation #20
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
MAC MSF Give me Sun!
Sue Devitt Lip Enhancing Gloss Coral Sands
Inglot Loose Shadow #14
Tokidoki Eye shadow Killer Candy
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara
MAC Brow Tint Girl Boy
Jennifer Aniston perfume

And here’s a run down of what I did:
1. Sweep Inglot #14 from lash to brow (on top of your favorite shadow base)
2. Apply Tokidoki Killer Candy to outer v and into crease (blend, blend, blend!)
3. Lightly blend a small amount of Inglot #14 on top of Killer Candy without completely covering Killer Candy
4. Apply Tokidoki shadow (wet) to upper and lower lashline
5. Sweep light amount of Inglot #14 just below Tokidoki Killer Candy on lower lash line
6. Give yourself 2-3 coats of mascara
7. Brush MAC Brow Tint onto brows
8. Apply foundation
9. Sweep MAC MSF at hollows of cheeks, temple and over bridge of nose (where the sun would naturally hit) and blend well into hairline
10. Dab Milani Baked Blush onto cheeks (not directly on apples of the cheek – in line with center of your iris) and blend towards hairline
11. Apply Sue Devitt Lip Enhacing Gloss
12. Dab a touch of Inglot #14 shadow onto lips
13. Smile…you look gorgeous!
What look did you enjoy this weekend? Did you keep it natural or express yourself with color? I always enjoy a good makeup chat so let me know what you wore below.
